during the uk riots the "hoodie" was symbol of exclusion and menace.
in 2007 a reported interviewed teenagers from the parson Bsnlieue from the riots and all of them were wearing hoodies. And in 2008 it was seen as a 2 pice suit in the financial centres of paris and London and represented a seizing of anoniminity and self-exemption from public identification.
hoodie's adoption began with the popularity with hip hop from the us in 1980s
it came an iconic symbol as it put emphasis on strength , status and power. teenagers the started to wear hoodies with white and black stripes to imitate robbers . before it symbolised power and success, while recently it became menace and lawless. it is also seen in britains asbo generation. in 2005 it was banned from bluewater shopping centre (Kent) and many schools in England and Wales.
having said this the hoodie was not only used by rebels, but from many years also by BMXers, skaters, surfers, emos - none of which linked to antisocial behaviour.
in suburbs and inner city estate where violence is common wearing a hoodie is common to blend in

grime social context
In what ways does the emergence of Grime reflect the social context? [Urban London]
It is industrial and cold, representing its state. dos shutting and police car was what the rappers where listening to in their everyday life.
they did not care about american music, and tried the best to do their own thing.
since they come from a violent place their music has violent lyrics.
as they stopped singing and producing music for eve, their music style started to change, and the culture started to be left behind.
- recreation of mainstream nature of garage
- strong personal identification appeal (uses and gratification)
- grime reflected the underground of london
- emerged from disenfranchised youth in East London ( no one cared about no one . government does not care about us)
- pirate radio key element
now he is returning to the roots of grime
- lyrics often revolve around gritty description of urban life
- music described as aggressive
- area= violent
- grime rave were rare, as they were not allowed to be put on by the police
- the rise of grime was tied in the rise of trident in order to combat gang violence.

woman's realm stereotypes essay
To what extent does the magazine Women’s Realm challenge or reinforce stereotypes.
woman's realm can be seen to reinforce stereotypes that women are expecrted to be in the domestic sphere and look after men. this is suggested for example during the raisins adverizment. we know that it is targeted at women sa the main image is a young lady, showing that women are the ones expected to do the cooking. in addition she is also holding a tray of food she has presumibly just prepared,. this further reinforces this point as women were expected by society to stay at home and preare dinner or their husbands.
having said this, this advert is also seen to be challenging the stereotypical views of womna, as at the time women were not encouraged to stand out and show their body. they were expected to stay at home in the background to men. however, she is desplaying her body as she is wearing a bright green eye-catching swimsuit. in addition she is aslo parctacing surf. at the time sport was considered a male activity, and the fact that she is shown surfing suggests that this magazine challanges the stereotypes of woman's representation.
having said this at the this edition was published consumerism was being entourage. Publishers used magazines to sell products that american women would need to purchase in order to live the "american dream life". we can see this for ecample thoruhg the contents page as makeup products are advertized. we see that women are encouraged to purchase products in order to be able to look beautiful, so that hey can "get and keep a man" , which was stereotypically thought to be their main aim at the time. this reinforces gauntlett's theory that the media provides us with the tools to create our own identity. it tells women that they ned to purchas the products in order to look beautiful.

postmodern video analysis
- You will analyse two music video and decide to what extent it is a postmodern music video. Mandatory music video: Eminem - Without Me and additional choices include Jay-Z - Moonlight, Little Mix - Black Magic, Young Thug - Wyclef Jean or Blink 182 - All the Small Thing.
in the eminem music video "without me" we see that he depicts himself as a superhero, ready to save the world. we see this for example through the use of costume as he dresses up as a hero and snatches the cd of the child as it contains explicit language. this seems to be against the steretypical postmodern music videos as narratives usually becomes negative , the bad guys win and everyone dies. in this music video there is suggestion of hope for the future instead of lack of hope, as the hero saves the young boy from the danger of :explicit language".
This idea, of the sic video being ant postmodernism is also seen in "black magic" by little mix, where at the beguinning the use of costume shows us that they are nerds,as they are wearing big black glasses and checked shirt. we also see that they have a bad time at school though the use of body language as they are not smiling or having fun, but looking sad at each other and suffering from the bullying, but at the end of the video they are seen as happy with their life and love to dance and party. i know this because of their body language as they are smiling and jumping around, suggesting they are having a good time. this suggests that there is happiness and hope for the future.

on the other hand we can see these videos as also being postmodern misuc videos.
for example in "without me" we see a range of examples of intertextuality. the opening lyrics of the song for example "two trailer park girls go round the outside" is based on a single by "malcom McLaren" mocking an underground artist.
There is also the presence of nostalgia in this music video and we can see this for example as there are references to scenes happened from the past. For example we see eminem dressed up as osama bin laden, referring to the terrosrist attacks, and we can see this as he is being chased by D12 from a tv channel.

little mix's video can alsobe seen as postmodern as it shown to be self reflective. it reflects on bullying and life for teenagers. we see this through the close up shots of the bands, which show their facial expressions and show their emotions through the development of the video.
applying goodwin's theory to a music video
- Find a music video of your choice - Create a PowerPoint where you discuss the purpose the purpose of a music video and explore the ways Goodwin’s theory can be applied to the music video.
With the establishing shot we can see that 2 ladies appear in bed with eminem during the music video, and this can support goodwig's theory that there is frequently notion of looking good and enphasis on the treating of women's bodys . they are wearing really little clothes, making the audience stare at their bodys, objetifying them, like they were objects.
During this video there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visual. we can see this for example as eminem is saying that he is back to save the world.
The use of costume is also really effective as we see him wearing superhero attire and as we see him dressed up as a superhero, trying to rescue a child from buying his cd which has explicit lyrics. This highlights how he is the good guy, trying to save the world. this supports goodwig's theory that what we see in music videos is used to illustrate what the lyrics of songs are saying.
Editing is also really effective as we see text on screen which enhance the narrative of the music video, and are used to show us what eminem is trying to say through his lyrics and music videos. "word spread that our hero has returned" is an example of this as it shows how eminem is back to save the children and therefore world. he uses shot reverse shot between an old famous singer and himself, and we see this as the man dressed in white sings and then it goes back to emit dressed as a hero. this suggests that parents of children live in the past and don't understand their music.
we also find different long takes of the rapper climbing the wall of the house, suggesting he is doing something bad and illegal, as he is not entering though the front door. this suggests that he is saying that no matter where you are, if the name "Eminem" is mentioned, people will have something bad to say about him. He implies that if you are a parent and you are attempting to not allow your kid to listen to him that they will find a way to listen to him because he's so good.

Andrew Goodwin's - music video theory
1- music video demonstrate genre characteristics - (stage, dance routine). this lead to intertextuality as a lot of rock bands for example take horror film ideas ands them in their music videos.
2- there is frequently reference to notion of looking and the treatment of the female body. they are usually in bikini, making them stare at women's body as they are objects.
3- there is a relationship between music and visuals. what we see on music videos is used to illustrat whatthe lyrics of a song are saying
4- the demands of the record label will include the needs for lots of close ups of the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work. the artist show us what we want to see.
5- there is often intersexual reference , as audiences usually enjoy knowing the "injoke"
