there is a blair in the human mind where our memory and our instincts are stored. this is called the unconcious mind as most of the time we are not aware of it.

froid brelieved that the primary motivvation for everything in life is sex . it was they key to undertand human beings. 

• What is a montage (soviet)?

he liked to put objects that are not associated with one another together to make something that was playful and  desturbing to stimulate the uconcious mind. 

ther are 2 types of paintings:

1- about dreams

2- automtism, insored by free association, designed to revieal the unconciois mind. 

• What is the purpose of a montage?

montage is combining shots that are depictive , single in meaning, natural in content-- into intellectual contexts and series. so two neutral pictures colliding creating one different. 

can be used to create tension by shortening up the pieces. 

• What role does sequencing and juxtaposition play in montage?
• What is intellectual montage?

it is cutting accordin the the shot's relationship to an intellectual concept. 

representation of gender

riptide
the representation of women in this music video is usually sexualised for audience pleasure. this supports the Male Gaze as  the video starts of with an establishing shot of a young woman at the beach slowly taking off her swimming costume before entering the sea. this reinforces Van zone's theory as she believed that gender is constructed through discourse, and that its meaning caries according to cultural and historical context. IN this case the idea f femininity is created by the fact that the woman has long blond hair and is wearing a small swimming costume, making her look appealing to the audience.


This in contradictory with the lip sync section of the music video as the woman start off with having the perfect make up, as expected by society. she looks strong confident and romantic, but at the end of the video her makeup become all ruined and smudged.  through the different jump cuts she becomes more and more sad and frustrated and this is not only seen through the changes and the ruining of her makeup, but also in her facial expression. she get from being a woman with strong personality to a sad person. the lyrics that she sings also are incorrect and we know this as their are subtitles accompanying the deliberately incorrect section. this suggests that it is wrong to have bad and smudged makeup, but women should always try to look their best.

this screenshot shows a woman looking through her binoculars. it is a low angle shot suggesting that she is being watched from below and it positions the audience with a sense of danger as she seems to be looking out for herself . it creates a sense of forbodeing.

this screenshot shows a woman being trapped around a tree. the low key lighting enhances the sense of darkness and danger created in this scene. her body language makes the woman seem strong and rebellious, as she is seen escaping from the tree which she was tied on to.

in this screenshot the woman seems to be represented in a very feminn way. she looks free and happy and is appreciating nature. this is seen though her body language, as she is holding her arms outage the sky, suggesting that she is taking in as much as she can of the beautiful things that she is seeing.

REPRESENTATION OF MEN

Men in this music video are represented as the working gender. they are represented as being able to do all the hard hand work and this is seen through the close up shot of the man cutting the plant, or the extra m close up shot of the hand of a man about to shoots a gun. this also highlights that men can be dangerous but also a support for women as they are their "let hand".

at the end of the video there is the hand of a female, but instead of doing different types of jobs, she seems to be about to hurt herself. this suggests that men are more capable at doing certain jobs than females are. 

Applying goodwig's theory to riptide

Goodwig theory:
- there is a link between lyrics and the video
- there is always intertextual reference
- there is frequently notion of looking good and enphasis on the treating of women's bodys 

During Reptide there are a lot of cross cutting between different images, which reinforce the song's lyrics. this is seen for example when it says : "running down to the riptide" and there is a behind the shoulder shot of a young girl with lon blonde hair running down a road towards the sea. This is an effective technique used in the music video as it helps the audience understand better the lyrics and the meaning of the song. this music video supports Goodwig's theory as he believed that during the videos ther eis always a link between the lyrics and the video, and this is present in more than one occasion. for example when the singer sings "ill be your left hand man" there is an extreme close up shot of a male left hand, reinforcing the lyrics being sung. 
Women are the main gender in this music video, as ther e are many shots of them. they are all wearing little clothing and this can be seen for ecample with the point of vew shot of the young girl wearing a yellow bikini. she is about to enter the water and is in the middle of taking her swimming costume off. this seems to suggest that women need to be getting undressed in order to be pretty as the lyrics say "i was scared of pretty girls" while sowing this shot.  

introduction to newspapers

tabloid and broadsheet.
tabloids are newspapers aimed for the lowers social classes, they have many pictures and use bold colours and focus on stories and gossips.
(the Sun, the daily mirror, Daily express, guardian, observer, daily mail, the sunday people, the daily star)
broadsheets are more serious newspapers with plain layout and concentrate on giving detailed articles and less on images. they concentrate on politics and international news.
