dizzee rascal goodwig theory

1.Look at how Goodwin’s theory applies to Dizzee Rascal’s Dream (supporting points with screenshots)

Goodwin argued that in music videos there is a link between the audio and the visuals. This is seen for example when he sings about young baby mothers and young baby fathers. puppet characters which look like mothers and fathers appear on screen
The images are highly illustrative, often featuring a literal interpretation of the lyrics e.g. ‘off licence’, ‘young babymothers’. This adds to the sense that a vivid story is being told.

goodwin also believed that it is important for an artist to be involved in the music video by performing as the main character or singer. it is done to help make the ong seem more realistic and it gives the audience a sense of connection and good understanding of the song. we see this in dream, as Dizee Rascal jumps out from the box, making it more realistic and engaging to the audience. HE argued that the protagonist of the video is very important and are presented in a unique way. "dream" seems to be against this as he is wearing stereotypical rapper costume. through the long medium shot he is seen wearing bagghy clothes and a red jumper, which is typical of rap singers.
Andrew goodwig believed that the music video is held together through mise en escene, special effects, sound and editing. this is seen for example through costume. the rapper's costume is in contrast with the lady's. Dizzee Rascal is constructed as a rebellious young black male through the dress codes of red tracksuit with a ‘hoodie’ top and trainers. on the other hand the lady is more "olden days' with her long blue dress and playing the piano.
  • The use of simple props and iconography, such as the nightclub signified by the disco ball and
dimmed lights, constructs distinct and recognisable settings to illustrate the lyrics and
    communicate meanings
The period setting of the sitting room is established through the mise-en-scène of the striped wallpaper, floral curtains and grand piano, connoting a middle-class environment that contrasts dramatically with the contemporary setting of the narrative. The stereotypically socially deprived, inner- city environment is constructed through the set and props on the piano (e.g. off licence building with letters missing, graffiti).
