Exam paper on portrayal of Donald trump magazine.
Compare the representation of ideologies in the Daily Mirror Magazines' front page
- consider how representation conveys ideologies
- consider similarities and differences in ideologies conveyed
- consider how the cultural context can affect the representations
difference
- Close up of person in the English front cover has it's eyes open, as if to take responsibility for its decision and is aware of what they have done. in the american the close up of statue of liberty has her eyes covered suggesting that they are still in shock and embarrassed of their decision, they don't want to see what they have done.
-gray in flag - shows ambiguity within the country - unknown what is going to happen. on the American one the they are destined to fail and live in destruction.
similarities
- "Britain votes to quit EU" ( british re to blame) similar to "what have they done?" (Americans are to blame)
-in english front cover you can't tell the person's gender meaning decision has affected both men and women. In American front cover "what it means for you and the world" showing that the decision has affected everyone.
- cracks in flag show the divided population. burned background shows how the population is also divided as they are fighting and having destruction.

comparing The sun (Putin) to The Times (Donald Trump)
The two magazine front covers are really similar as they showcase power. The main image in both cases are presidents in charge of a country, who depictthemselves as being powerful and strong. This is seen for example with in the times asDonald Trump is holding his fist up to shoe that he is strong , and in the Sun Putting is challenging Europe to fight him, and this can be seen for example through the headline “have a go if EU think you are hard enough”, showing how he believes he is a strong confident leader ready to challenge and fight Europe.
A difference between the 2 magazines can be seen through patriotism. Donald Trump has the American flag in the background, showing the love for his country and his dedication to it. This is missing in The Sun, suggesting that Russia’s president isn’t as commited in the state and hasa lack of support.
An other difference between the two leaders is that in they are presented in opposite ways, Donald Trump portrays himself as a leader. He looks professional through his choice of clothing as he is wearing a blue suit, white shirt and red tie. This makes him seem a trustable and professional man ready to take care and lead his country. On the other hand Putin seems more aggressive and in show as the villain, ready to take on Europe and fight. This is seen for example through the use of props as he has a gun pouch hanging around his belt, showing he is violent and the enemy.
In The Sun Binary opposition is created through the contrast between Putin and the EU.
Trupm- admired putin – villain
Binary opposition – Putin vs Eu. Trup – leader for all (unity with fist) putin is just for Russia trying to fight EU
Donal trump – good guy – Putting (villain)
Both patriotic
Both havesiilar facial expression
Truopprofesional- putin not
Trup has already won, while Putin still needs to fight.
Donald Trump Daily mirror essay
Question: Using your knowledge of Donald Trump's background and election campaign, to what extent is the Daily Mirror's sensationalist depiction of Trump's victory justified. Refer to the ideologies and meanings conveyed in the text.
the daily mirror depicts Trump's victory from his campaign as big mistake from the Americans which will only bring destruction and suffering. the black overcast in the background emphasises this as there are big dark clouds and burned down buildings, showing that the new president will just bring sadness and destruction. As we see the sky is not completely covered by the clouds, but there are some gaps in the sky , as if the dark is overtaking the blue, suggesting that we are starting a new era with this new president, and it is not going to be one filled with joy and happiness, bad of sadness and suffering. {6}
This is further reinforced through the main image. as we see there is the Statue of the liberty occupying most of the magazine's cover. She is holding her hands over her face, suggesting that she is in shock. this is because no one expected Donald Trump to win the election and become the president of the US. By hiding her face her body language emphasises how she believes that the Americans have made a horrific decision and she is ashamed of them for voting for trump. the use of the statue of liberty as the main image is really effective as she represents Liberty and is an icon of freedom of the united states, a welcoming sign to the immigrants arriving from abroad, and this is contradictory as trump wants to close the borders from immigrants and build a wall to block the Mexican people from entering his country. {22}
the statue is missing her torch, which she usually holds in her hand. it symbolises the way to freedom, as it shows the path to liberty. the fact that is is missing suggests a sense of hopelessness, and that America has lost its way in sense of politics, as they don't have anyone to guide them down the right path anymore. Trump is not doing his job correctly as he is not creating liberty but sending away all the immigrants.
the paper's headline further reinforces this idea that electing Trump was a mistake. "What have they done?" Places the blame on the American people as they were the one who voted and made Trump the president. by using pronouns like "they" it creates an opposition between "us" vs "them", showing that we are different from Americans and are not responsible for their decisions.
America has always been proud to be known as the land of opportunities, and this can be seen for example during their national Athem "the land of the free and the home of the brave". Donald Trump is not respecting this as he is vilifying groups of people and treating them as thiefs and criminals.
This shows that the Daily mirror does not approve and support the new president's victory and are forshadowing a time of destruction and sadness because of his election and power. {31} {10}
